Wines reds Designation of origin D.O. Empordà

The appellation of Origin Empordà is located on the northern-east of Catalonia. The territory is distributed in two regions and 55 villages. 35 belong to Alt Empordà and the remaining 20 belong to Baix Empodrà. The average annual production reaches the 65000 hectoliters of wine with a planted surface of around 2000 hectares. From its beginnings the denomination was called Empordà-Costa Brava, but in 2006 the indication Costa Brava was deleted.

Temperate climate, ideal for the vines growing and for the production of high quality wines. Winters are soft with sporadic icy snow. Hot summers although the closeness with the sea helps in moderating the temperature. Annual temperatures that fluctuate between 14 and 16ºC and the modest rainfalls (about 500lt per year). Very characteristic from the Emporda zone is the wind called “Tramuntana” a northern wind that can reach strong gusts of 120km/h but also keeping the vineyards in a good health status.

Despite the heterogeneity of the soils, most of the vines are located in sandy lands, poor in organic material and generally of acid character. In the Emporda plain the soils are a little more alluvial, and it’s near the mountains where soils of slate and granite. The traditional red grape varieties are Carinyena also called Samsó and Garnatxa Negra, better known as Lledoner. Other harvested red varieties are Ull de Llebre, Syrah, Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon. More planted white grapes are Garnatxa Blanca, Garnatxa Roja and Macabeu. This white varieties are complemented with Moscatell, Xarel·lo, Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc and Gewürztraminer. Garnatxa de l’Empordà stand out among all, a liqueur wine elaborated with at least 90% of Garnatxa Blanca and Roja and reinforced with wine alcohol, aged by the Solera system.
