Established on 1999, the denomination of origin Catalunya includes the majority of the Catalan winemaking towns. The planted surface raises the 60.000 hectares and the annual production moves around the 60 millions of liters. The purpose of creating a D.O that overlaps the other Catalan appellations was to give more freedom and flexibility to the producers with the aim of promoting the creativity and the experimentation. The main differences are the use of a major number of grape varieties and the permissiveness to make blends with grapes from different zones, in addition to the inclusion of winemaking towns which could not integrate to any other appellation.
The D.O. Catalunya is located between the Mediterranean Sea and the Pyrenees, on the northeast of Spain. The climate is mainly Mediterranean with an average temperature of 15°C and a rainfall that can oscillate from 350 to 600 liters each year, depending on the zone. As we approach the coast, the temperatures will be milder due to the sea thermal effect. On the inner zones, the climate will be more continental with rigorous winters and suffocating summers. The soils are poor in organic matter with deposits of sedimentary and calcareous rock. There are 35 allowed varieties, composed by the traditional Catalan grapes and some foreign varieties that have perfectly acclimatized. The white allowed varieties are Albariño, Chardonnay, Chenin Blanc, Garnatxa Blanca, Gewürztraminer, Macabeu, Malvasia, Moscatell d’Alexandria and Frontignan, Parellada, Pedro Ximénez, Picapoll, Riesling, Sauvignon Blanc, Sumoll, Xarel·lo and Vinyater. The red allowed grape varieties are Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon, Garnatxa Negra, Garnatxa Peluda, Garnatxa Roja, Garnatxa Tintorera, Merlot, Monastrell, Petit Verdot, Picapoll, Pinot Noir, Carinyena, Sumoll, Syrah, Trepat and Ull de Llebre.
