In the 19th century, after the phylloxera attack in the French vineyards, a key event for the future of Somontano wine production took place: the Lalanne family and winery arrived from Bordeaux and Buenos Aires to Somontano and introduced grape varieties such as Chardonnay, Merlot or Cabernet-Sauvignon in the region, which since then have been part of Somontano's wine heritage.
All this, led to an increase in the wine production of the region, the realization of good sales and an increase in exports, and that, during this century, wine production in Huesca was increasingly sticking to the Somontano, due to the specialization of the area in the production and the good quality of the wines. In the 20th century, specifically in the 1960s, the birth of the Somontano del Sobrarbe Regional Cooperative, which brought together most of the winegrowers in the area, marked the area's commitment to quality viticulture as the driving force of the economy and the first steps towards the birth of the Somontano Designation of Origin, which was approved in 1984. From that moment on, and especially from the 90s onwards, the arrival of large business projects with heavy investments in the area placed Somontano wines among the best in the country with the D.O. Somontano.
