Between the cities of Barcelona and Tarragona is located the Penedès region, with the largest wine-growing surface and the largest production in Catalonia. Bordered by the Mediterranean Sea, the Pre-litoral Mountains and from the Llobregat River to the Gaià River. The most important cities of this appellation of origin are the Vilafranca del Penedès (capital city) and Sant Sadurní d’Anoia. The more planted variety is Xarel·lo, with a surface of more than 7000 hectares.
Due to the proximity with the coast and the diverse geographical altitudes, the Denomination of Origin Penedès is divided in three regions very differentiated in climatically terms, although the general conditions are typical of the traditional Mediterranean climate, soft and warm. The zone with more rainfalls and with more temperature contrast is the Superior region, comprising the regions of Alt Penedès, Alt Camp, Anoia and Baix Llobregat. The closest region to the coast has a temperate clime, due to the influence of the sea and is called Penedès Marítim, including Baix Penedes and Garraf. The Penedès Central is basically a mixture of both previous regions defined before.
The wide range of wines is consequence of the long wine tradition from the region. The autochthonous varieties from the zone are mixed with some international varieties that have perfectly adjusted to the area conditions. Some of these varieties are Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, even Riesling. Regarding red wines, always taking in consideration the constant innovation and the new palate trends, are from diverse lines but with a great quality. The most harvested grapes are Garnacha Negra, Syrah, Monastrell, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Pinot Noir, Ull de Llebre and Carinyena.
