Wines reds Designation of origin D.O. Montsant

The denomination of Origin Montsant was created in 2001, comprised by the cellars from the Falset zone that previously were included at the denomination of Origin Tarragona. From the 27 cellars at the beginning to more than 50 nowadays, data that indicates the huge growth of the denomination in just few years. The production zone is mostly located at the Priorat region and in lower proportion at the “Ribera d’Ebre” zone. A remarkable fact is the cohabitation between the huge cooperatives and the familiar cellars, which generate a production of more than 10 millions of Kg each year, in a total surface of 2.000 hectares. The 70% of the volume is exported to other countries such as Germany and US.

There is an unification between the temperate Mediterranean climate and the cooler weather from the medium size mountains. The region is situated among the 200 and 700 meters of altitude with an annual rainfall of 500 liters. Bordered in the north with “Serres del Montsant” and “La LLena”, on the east by the coast lane mountain range, the mountains of “Figuera” and “Tormo” on the west and by the rivers “Siurana” and “Montsant” on the south. The geography is rather rugged and abrupt, only smoothed on the south plains. The soils are mainly calcareous, granite ground and rock soils of slate siliceous floor.

The 90% of the production is intended to the elaboration of red wines and the allowed varieties are Garnatxa Negra, Carinyena, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Monastrell, Picapoll Negre, Garnatxa Peluda, Syrah and Ull de Llebre. The regulatory council recommends the elaboration of wines with Garnatxa Negra and Carinyena because these are the autochthonous varieties and the ones that better express the Montsant identity. Regarding the elaboration of white wine, the allowed grape varieties are Garnatxa Blanca, Macabeu, Chardonnay, Moscatell, Xarel·lo and Parellada. Among them, highlight the wines processed with Garnatxa Blanca and Macabeu that provide a silky and structured palate. On the other hand, there is also a long tradition with the sweet and rancid wines.
