Founded in 1324 by the gentleman from Sitges Bernat de Fonollar, the Hospital San Juan Bautista de Sitges Foundation is one of the oldest active institutions in Catalonia. At the beginning, this Hospital was focused within the medieval concept of hospitality and shelter for the poor, pilgrims, orphans and the sick; and it was located just above the sea rocks of Monte de Sitges. But due to advances in medicine, science and technology, that building was outdated.
It is then that in 1912 the new modernist building was inaugurated, by the architect Fuente y Gumà, with an artistic and architectural language with a cataloged heritage value.
It is in this almost museum complex where the main function of the foundation is developed, which since the nineties of the 20th century has been dedicated to the active accompaniment of the elderly, with the complementary activity of the Winery.
WINERY HOSPITAL MALVASIA DE SITGES DULCE
At the beginning of the 18th century, Malvasia vines occupied a quarter of the land that was cultivated in the municipality of Sitges. With the arrival of phylloxera and the appearance of champagne, the last quarter of the 19th century, marked the beginning of the decline of malvasia. Aware that this variety would end up completely disappearing, shortly before his death, the diplomat Manuel Llopis y de Casadas (1885-1935) wanted to avoid it by bequeathing to the Hospital de San Juan Bautista a vineyard located in Aiguadolç and also the family business of making malvasía . Thanks to this legacy that today Sitges, through the San Juan Bautista Hospital Foundation, continues to enjoy this product, which, today, is the most genuine that they can offer to their visitors.
