INFORMATION OF INTEREST Red Mallolet 2018
At the end of the 19th century, the phylloxera devastated almost the entire European continent and the Roig family moved to the vineyards of southern France in Roussillon, to be able to start again from scratch. Beginning in 1896, great-grandfather Quim began replanting the vines they had in the Empordà, in Mollet de Peralada, which had died from the cursed plague.
Samsó was the main choice, then for its high yields but today, controlling its production, it gives us wines with a very pleasant freshness and a very Mediterranean profile.
The vineyards are located on the Mollet de Peralada plain, 50 meters above sea level. The soils are sandy in character with a minor mixture of clay and river sediments. The Mediterranean climate gives personality to wine, with the Tramontana as the protagonist and a fairly low annual rainfall.
The Roig Parals have modernized the one that the ancestors started, in order to continue with the family tradition.
In 2005 Santi Roig and Mariona Parals started a dream, which was to continue taking care of the vineyards of more than 100 years that great-grandfather Quim had replanted after the phylloxera.
The wines must express their origin and that is why they have always believed in indigenous varieties, especially samsó, macabeo and garnachas, which some date back to 1896.
Organic farming is a very important concept. It helps to get very good quality grapes to make wine that best expresses the region, the climate and the terrain.
