La Retsina is a type of traditional wine from Greece, produced with an infusion of pine resin that gives it a very characteristic flavor. The majority of Retsinas are produced from white grape varieties.

The grape variety most commonly associated with these wines is Saviatano, although blends are often made with the Roditis and Assyrtico varieties.

These wines have their origin in classical antiquity. Greek navigators used pine resins to hermetically seal amphorae stoppers during their Mediterranean voyages as well as to internally coat the porous walls of amphorae as protection against oxidation. In the third century AD. C., the use of barrels to transport and preserve wine became popular in the Roman Empire, but the eastern regions of Byzantium retained a taste for resin wines during the Middle Ages and up to the present day.

Traditionally Retsinas had a pungent aroma of turpentine. Modern examples, though much more delicate than their ancestors, still display subtle resin aromas.
Today, pine resin is added to wine during fermentation. This creates an oily film whose surface is clarified and removed with the solids before bottling.
