Designation of Origin A.O.C. Bordeaux

Bordeaux is one of the wine-growing areas par excellence. The region is located on the west of France, on the Aquitania zone. The traditional cellars use to be on the middle of the harvested zones. The planted surface comprises a total of 117.000 hectares with a production of more than 700 millions of bottles per year. The zone has a total of 57 appellations of origin Controlée (A.O.C), and the major part of the wines are red, although there are also renowned sweet white wines such as Sauternes and Barsac wine.

The region has an excellent climate conditions for the vines harvesting. The typical soils are formed of gravel and stone. All the ownerships are located next to the river Garonne and Dordogne that unite forming the Gironde estuary. These rivers will define geographically the different appellations of origin. On the left part of Garonne is located the region of Medoc where the appellations of origin Margaux and Pauillac are placed. Sauternes and Graves are also in this zone. In the middle of both rivers we find the zone Entre-deux-Mers. Lastly, on the right riverside from the Dordogne river are located the famous lands of Saint Émilion, Pomerol and Fronsac.

A distinctive feature from the Bourgogne production is the concept of “terroir”, where the priority is the production of wines that reflect their origin; the soils where the vine develops, elaborating must wine that belong from one estate or plot. The opulent red wines aged in oak barrels and special sweet wines from Sauternes are the emblem of Bordeaux and some of them are listed among the best wines of the world. The region use to make different official classifications to evaluate the quality of their products, the first on 1855 where the wines with better capabilities were declared as Premiers Crus, followed by the Deuxièmes Crus, Troisièmes Crus, Quatrièmes Crus and Cinquièmes Crus. The allowed red varieties are Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Malbec, Petit Verdot and Carménère. Regarding allowed white varieties, we can highlight Sauvignon Blanc, Sémillon, Muscadelle, Ugni Blanc and Colombard.
